Artist: The Get Up Kids
Album: Something To Write Home About
Release Date: September 28, 1999
With about 5 weeks until this album is a full 10 years old, Something To Write Home About is an emo indie classic. Originally released on Vagrant records, this album is chalk full of easy to listen to emo songs (of course if melodic screaming and loud guitars is your idea of emo easy listening). Purely a classic and definitely an influence on may artists out there. Exactly who? I don’t know, but ask a lot of them and you’ll hear the Get Up Kids being mentioned.
Why should I dust off this album?
The Get Up Kids have been doing shows lately and with a “reunion” tour coming to Los Angeles and other cities in California. It’s time to brush up on the lyrics and get ready for the sing along at the concert, cause there will be one. As for me I’ll be there at the Avalon and the Vegas show…and yes, I’ll be singing along.
If you’re not going to the show(s), it’s still a great album. There’s a lot of energy and it’ll take you back to a time when things were much simpler, 1999. The emo tend was in it’s horrible infancy and Y2k was a threat to us all. Now in retrospect, both the Y2k scare and emo fashion were both huge disasters. However, the music was the only saving grace. Don’t forget to check out their other albums Four Minute Mile, On the Wire, and The Guilt Show. All have their own different styles, but each good for different reasons.
